Tattoo Aftercare: A Complete Guide to Proper Healing

Getting a tattoo is just the first step in the journey — proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals well, stays vibrant, and avoids complications. Here’s a detailed, easy-to-follow guide to help you take care of your new ink.

First Steps After Getting Your Tattoo

Your artist may apply a second skin (transparent protective film) to cover your fresh tattoo. This helps protect it from bacteria and irritation during the initial healing phase.

But what if it comes off early? Don’t panic — here’s what to do:

If the Second Skin Peels Off Early

1. Clean the Area Gently

  • Wash your hands first.
  • Use lukewarm water and mild, unscented soap to clean the tattoo.
  • Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.

2. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

  • Use a tattoo-specific healing ointment or fragrance-free cream like Aquaphor.
  • Don’t over-apply — a thick layer can clog pores and slow healing.

3. Keep the Tattoo Clean and Dry

  • Avoid tight clothes or surfaces that may rub or irritate.
  • No swimming, no baths, and avoid long showers — keep the tattoo out of water.

4. Reapply Second Skin (Optional)

  • If you have a fresh second skin, you can reapply it — just make sure the area is clean and dry.
  • If not, continue with regular cleaning and moisturizing.

5. Monitor the Healing Process

  • Watch for signs of infection: unusual redness, swelling, or pus.
  • If something feels off, contact your tattoo artist or consult a doctor.

Daily Aftercare Instructions

Day 1–3

  • Wash gently with antibacterial, fragrance-free soap.
  • Pat dry and apply a thin layer of healing cream.

Day 4–14

  • Clean the tattoo once or twice daily.
  • Use a light, unscented moisturizer.

Week 2–3

  • The tattoo may begin to peel or flake — this is completely normal.
  • Do not pick or scratch it!

We recommend products like Bepanthen or any healing cream designed specifically for tattoos.
Never use cosmetic or edible creams.

Final Tips for Tattoo Aftercare

  • Avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed.
  • Don’t wear tight or rough clothing over the tattoo.
  • Stay hydrated and keep the area clean.
  • Healing times vary, but most tattoos settle in 2–3 weeks.
